KATHMANDU – A significant step toward strengthening regional youth relations was taken on March 10, 2026, as the Embassy of Japan in Kathmandu and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) finalized an Addendum to the Renewed Memorandum on the SAARC – Japan Special Fund. This agreement specifically paves the way for the implementation of the JENESYS 2025 Phase II initiative. To facilitate this phase, the Japanese Government has committed a contribution of JPY 13,000,000.

Official Signing in Kathmandu

The Addendum was formally signed by two key dignitaries:

  • H.E. Mr. Md. Golam Sarwar, Secretary-General of SAARC.
  • H.E. Mr. MAEDA Toru, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal.

This signing represents a continued evolution of the enduring partnership between Japan and SAARC. The collaboration is centered on the JENESYS Youth Exchange Programme, which operates through the dedicated SAARC–Japan Special Fund provided by Japan.

A Flagship Initiative for South Asian Youth

The JENESYS programme stands as a premier exchange project between Japan and SAARC Member States. It is fully funded and executed by the Japanese Government, with organizational assistance from the SAARC Secretariat.

The program is designed to offer South Asian youth direct exposure to Japan’s:

  • Economic and technological advancements.
  • Developmental strategies and innovations.
  • Rich cultural traditions and social values.

Fostering Future Leadership

Under the Phase II cycle of JENESYS 2025, roughly 20 representatives from SAARC nations are slated to travel to Japan. Historically, this initiative has functioned as a vital bridge, building mutual trust and interpersonal networks between the youth of South Asia and Japan.

Beyond cultural immersion, the program empowers participants with fresh perspectives and expertise intended to support the broader socio-economic progress of the SAARC region. By renewing this commitment, both Japan and SAARC emphasize their dedication to regional unity and the cultivation of future leaders through lasting cross-border friendships.
