News| 16th August : Latin America New Zealand Business Council celebrated 60 Years of Argentina-New Zealand Bilateral Relations: A Focus on Trade and Sports
In a remarkable celebration of six decades of diplomatic relations, Argentina and New Zealand recently hosted a grand event at Eden Park, Auckland.
The event, which highlighted the strong ties in trade and sports between the two nations, saw the special attendance of Her Excellency Ms. Maria Belen Bogado, Rt Hon Helen Clark, and Sir Don McKinnon.
The evening was graced by an impressive lineup of guest speakers, including Dame Patsy Reddy, Mr. Barba, David Chin, Genevieve Clark, and Andrea Bonetto, who all shared insights and paved the way for new opportunities in the bilateral relationship

The event was generously sponsored by the Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence, Latam Airlines, Euro Vintage, Onetai, Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), and VIVA Expeditions Ltd. Their support was instrumental in making the celebration a success.
Hon Melissa Lee, along with ambassadors and honorary consuls from the New Zealand diplomatic and business community, also attended the event.
It was fantastic to see such a diverse group come together to celebrate the enduring relationship between Argentina and New Zealand organized by LANZBC.

This milestone event not only commemorated the past 60 years of cooperation but also set the stage for future collaborations, particularly in the realms of trade and sports. The presence of distinguished guests and the enthusiastic participation of the community underscored the strong and friendly ties between the two nations.
Why This Milestone Matters Now
Beyond the celebration, this 60-year anniversary occurs at a pivotal moment for both Southern Hemisphere nations.
-
Economic Synergy in a Changing World
As of 2024, New Zealand is actively seeking to “de-risk” its trade portfolio by strengthening ties with Latin America. Argentina, with its massive agricultural potential and recent shifts toward market liberalization, presents a natural partner. By focusing on shared sectors like agritech and renewable energy, both nations can move from being competitors in the global market to collaborative partners.
-
The “Soft Power” of Sports
Hosting the event at Eden Park was no coincidence. Sports, particularly rugby, serve as the “social glue” of this relationship. The Pumas and the All Blacks have created a bridge of mutual respect that translates into business trust. In an era where traditional diplomacy can feel distant, this “sports diplomacy” provides a unique, high-trust foundation for commercial deals.
-
Strategic Geography
Both countries serve as gateways to their respective regions: New Zealand to the Asia-Pacific and Argentina to the Mercosur bloc. Strengthening this “Trans-Pacific” corridor is essential for food security and technological exchange, ensuring that both nations remain resilient against global supply chain disruptions.
The Road Ahead
The next decade of this partnership is likely to shift from simple commodity exchange to knowledge-sharing. Whether it is LIC’s expertise in livestock genetics or Argentina’s burgeoning tech sector, the foundation laid at this 60th-anniversary celebration signals a move toward a more integrated, high-tech bilateral future.
