G20 2026 Miami Summit: Members, U.S. Priorities and What to Expect
May , 2026 : The Group of Twenty, better known as the G20, is moving from Africa to the United States after South Africa’s 2025 presidency, with the 2026 Leaders’ Summit scheduled to take place in Miami, Florida.
The 2023 G20 Summit was hosted by India in New Delhi, followed by Brazil’s 2024 summit in Rio de Janeiro and South Africa’s 2025 summit in Johannesburg. The next summit will be hosted by the United States, with Miami named as the host city for the 2026 G20 Leaders’ Summit.
According to the official U.S. G20 website, the United States says its 2026 presidency will focus on returning the forum to what it describes as its core economic mission: growth, innovation and partnerships. The official G20 events calendar lists the Leaders’ Summit in Miami, Florida, for December 14/15, 2026.
What is the G20?
The G20 is an international forum that brings together major developed and developing economies to discuss global economic, financial and policy challenges.
According to the G20 South Africa website, the forum was founded in 1999 after the Asian financial crisis as a platform for finance ministers and central bank governors. Its role later expanded after the global financial crisis, when leaders began meeting at head-of-state and head-of-government level.
Today, the G20 covers a wider agenda, including trade, development, energy, health, climate, agriculture, digital economy and financial stability. It is not a formal treaty-based organization and does not have a permanent secretariat. Instead, the presidency rotates each year among member countries.
Who are the current G20 members?
The G20 currently includes 19 countries and two regional bodies: the European Union and the African Union. The African Union became part of the G20 in 2023, giving the African continent a permanent seat in the forum.
The current members are:
Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, the United States, and G20 Miami 2026 Non-State Participants European Union and the African Union.
Together, G20 members represent around 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade and about two-thirds of the world’s population, according to G20 South Africa.
What is the G20 presidency?
The G20 presidency changes every year. The host country is responsible for setting the agenda, organizing meetings and guiding discussions with other members.
To maintain continuity, the presidency is supported by a “troika”, made up of the previous, current and next host countries. During South Africa’s 2025 presidency, the troika included Brazil, South Africa and the United States.
This means the G20 leadership moved from Brazil in 2024, to South Africa in 2025, and then to the United States for 2026.

What will the United States focus on in 2026?
The official U.S. G20 presidency has listed three major priorities for 2026: reducing regulatory burdens, unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains, and advancing innovation in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
On regulation, the U.S. presidency says it wants to promote policies that reduce barriers to investment, support competitiveness and encourage job creation.
On energy, the agenda is focused on affordable, reliable and secure energy supplies, with emphasis on energy security and resilient supply chains.
On technology, the U.S. says it wants to support pro-innovation policies for AI and emerging technologies while strengthening manufacturing, skilled talent and supply chains.
Who attended the 2025 G20 in South Africa?
South Africa’s 2025 G20 Summit drew a broad group of leaders, member delegations, guest countries and regional partners.
A report published on the G20 South Africa website said 42 countries were expected to participate in the Johannesburg summit, including G20 members, guest nations and invited regional partners. The same report noted that Zimbabwe participated as an invited nation, represented by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, while China was represented by Premier Li Qiang and the United Kingdom by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The report highlighted the diplomatic scale of the summit, as leaders and senior representatives gathered in Johannesburg to discuss economic recovery, trade pressures and global cooperation.
Who has been invited to the 2026 G20 so far?
A full official guest list for the 2026 Miami summit has not yet been published on the official G20 website.
However, AP reported that President Donald Trump said Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan would be invited to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami. AP also reported that South Africa would not be invited, citing Trump’s comments, although South Africa remains a G20 member.
Host countries often invite non-member countries, regional partners and international organizations to participate in G20 meetings. The final guest list can change depending on the host country’s priorities and the diplomatic context before the summit.
Atlanta to Host G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Before Miami Summit
Before the main Leaders’ Summit in Miami, the United States will also host the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 30/31, 2026. According to a U.S. State Department media note, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host the meeting, which is expected to bring together foreign ministers from major economies to discuss global stability, prosperity, economic challenges, open markets and resilient supply chains. The State Department described Atlanta as a centre of diplomacy, business and global connectivity. The Leaders’ Summit will then take place on December 14/15, 2026, at Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida.
Why the 2026 summit matters
The 2026 G20 summit comes at a time when major economies are facing pressure from slow growth, energy security concerns, rapid AI development, supply-chain risks and geopolitical divisions.
For the United States, the Miami summit is expected to place economic growth, energy security and emerging technology at the centre of the G20 agenda. For other members, the summit will be a test of whether the forum can balance national priorities with wider global cooperation.
As the G20 moves from Johannesburg to Miami, the 2026 presidency will show how the United States wants to shape global economic discussions in a period of competition, technological change and shifting alliances.
